Electricity in New Zealand

There has never been a better time to invest in power generation assets in New Zealand.
Electrification, strong population growth and decommissioning of legacy thermal generation, has created electricity shortages at times of peak demand.
New Zealand has committed that all greenhouse gases, besides methane from waste and agriculture, will reach Net Zero by 2050.
1100 GWh of new renewable power generation will be needed annually for the next 30 years to meet this goal.
New Zealand operates a free market for wholesale electricity with active trading and hedging. Average market prices are high and forecast to rise through 2045.
Major electricity users are increasingly seeking long-term power purchase agreements with renewable generators to ensure stable pricing and to meet their sustainability goals.

Wind power in New Zealand

New Zealand is amongst the world’s most suitable locations for wind generation but has one of the lowest penetrations of wind, at less than 10% of capacity.
The upper North Island is served by only one operational wind farm. Most planned new generation is solar.
Wind generation profile better matches demand during daily and seasonal peaks, allowing wind farms to capture high pricing at times when solar generation is low.
Wind is the lowest cost form of generation and has the least embodied carbon.
Ventus owns New Zealand’s largest portfolio of wind farm development assets located in the most attractive region for new generation.
There are barriers to entry for new wind farms in New Zealand and few mature wind farm developments.
